I think I understand where youre coming from and I have to agree in some cases. but since you asked......

Regardless of similarities in components, at least for this enthusiast, the brand IS important as it represents the styling, vision, and direction of the division itself which often differs within a company almost as much as the manufacturers themselves.

For example, when somebody says that they have an Oldsmobile(and it's not a 442), what's the first thing that enters the mind? At least for me, it's not youth, horsepower, sleek styling, & speed. IMO the name "Oldsmobile" is synonomous with "affordable luxury".

Cross pollenating components and technology within the divisions is good as it combines volume which brings down costs. However, an Oldsmobile Corvette to me would be like seeing a man in a dress. I'd just assume not see it at all.
